highs and moderate lows v2

 pre-holiday valleys and peaks…

moderate low. We are having a windstorm in the northeast right now and Lil’ Momma woke at 1am because the sound of the wind was louder than her white noise and we were mostly up until she left for school. In her defense,  it was/is incredibly loud. These nights are few and far between now that she’s 9, but lack of or broken sleep takes me back to her first 6 years (especially the first 3) where sleep was a legitimate issue* and I have to remind myself that tired and sad can feel the same to me, sometimes haha!

high. I bought a winter coat! I honestly don’t know why I’ve been making do the past few winters with layers of hoodies and coats that just suck up moisture. Yesterday, Brian and I had the day off and we nipped out to a store so I could try on a few coats meant to go out in the snow and cold. Sticker shock aside (and with the luck of sales), I’m excited to be more comfortable making snow people and winter walking this year

moderate low. I’m a little overwhelmed with the amount of baking I have to do tomorrow. 3 out of 4 cookies we’ve made before (chocolate Andes cookies, chewy ginger molasses cookies, and our family’s signature chewy chocolate and potato chip cookies), but we are attempting a Norwegian lemon shortbread cookie as Lil’ Momma has been all about learning traditional recipes on both sides of our little family. I’m sure it will be fine - I’m just going to work out a dough chilling timeline to prove to myself it’s doable!

high. It’s Christmas Eve Eve and I get to spend this weekend with my little family and my mom for a little bit, and next week with my girl. And, Brian and I have all our presents and are 90% wrapped! And, Brian I got each other a quarter of “of the month” subscriptions and his is snacks from around the world and the first month is Austria!

Seriously, so grateful for this life and these people and the chance to sit and revel in that.

Do you have a signature cookie? We take a lot of pride in ours, haha!

*having a baby be on a large daily dose of steroids for their entire first year is a story for another time, oof

  1. Those cookies sound insanely good! I would love to sample each and every one of them.
I'm glad you have a proper coat - having good outerwear has been the key to my enjoyment of the frigid weather we have here!

    1. The cookies were a hit! I was so worried about not having a “formal” dessert. Sadly, the coat still had the security tag on, so a trip back is on the list for school vacation week! Hope you had a good holiday!

  2. My gluten-free chocolate chip cookies regularly pass as just regular cookies, so I'm quite proud of that. I also like to make buckeyes (peanut butter balls coated in chocolate) and a chewy molasses cookie.

A good winter coat can be a game changer! I wish you many years of warmth and coziness with it!

    1. Oh, I love a buckeye! Also, please know I’m a huge fan of your blog, but my phone / iPad won’t let me comment on it. Once my legit computer is set up, I’ll keep trying (but I do think responses in my head when I read your posts)!

  3. Oooh I am interested in the Norwegian lemon cookies! I hope they turn out great! The rest of the cookies sound so yummy!

I just ordered a new winter coat -- I'm excited for it to arrive. My current one is fine, but I've had it for the better part of a decade and it looks it.

    1. They were the hit of our meal! And, so simple. I’ll be sure to link to the recipe in my round up (even if the pictures don’t do them justice!)

  4. I'm so sorry about such a rough first year (+); the infant stage is exhausting in the best of circumstances.
Those cookies do all sound amazing. I don't actually make many cookies at Christmas. I'm not a huge cookie fan, though my Mom always makes WAY too many. She's bringing some fudge tomorrow night for a Christmas Eve smorgasbord and I'll contribute Peanut Butter Balls and Saltine Toffee.

    Merry Christmas!

And yes - a good coat makes such a difference. I'm slowly building up my cold weather gear. I have heated socks, leather snowmobile gloves, a great coat, amazing snowpants...and I think for Christmas I'm getting a heated vest!! I run cold, but these extra steps really help!

    1. Heated socks sound so amazing! I’m really trying to not let my lack of gear be a showstopper for getting us outside.

I hope you had a lovely Christmas with your family!
