monday musings #4

It’s been a wild July and I feel like I’ve been scattered all over the place. I figured I’d start the week off with some quick updates! Weighted dance Dino and hotel room ice cream!   PT Update I’m in this weird space where I feel like I should be progressing faster, but I’ve also come so, so far. I have to keep reminding myself that I started weight-bearing at the end of May and got out of the boot and back to driving at the start of July – it really hasn’t been that long!   Now that I’m more comfortable walking (and less terrified my ankle/foot will shatter into a million pieces), my PT is all about building strength, balance, and endurance. I’m finding that I can walk for a few minutes in good form and then I start to limp– and, the limp leads to my right hip and lower back hurting. This was exacerbated by going back into the office 2 days a week (which is so much walking) and sitting in awful chairs on the weekends for Lil Momma’s performances. So, I’m also doing a lot of ...

I  started PT  last Thursday! It feels so good to be doing things! Yet – it is also hard to do things when the only thing I’ve been doing is keeping my foot elevated for the last 6 weeks. I had read so much of this is mental and that really is true. My first PT activities have included doing the ankle alphabet (literally drawing the letters with my big toe) and dorsiflexion with a band a few times a day to increase mobility and TAKING 20 STEPS AN HOUR!! (in the boot) (on crutches) (at 25%). The steps took me on a journey. First, it’s hard to step down when the whole point wasn’t to step down for weeks and weeks. Next, it’s hard to recognize what 25% pressure feels like. I did the whole thing with the scale and figuring out what it feels like, but it’s hard to know in the moment if I’m putting enough pressure on it. But, all good steps (haha) in the right direction and I’m excited to do more at my 2 PT appointments this week! Lil Momma had a tween sass-induced tech break for 24...

We took a day trip to Mystic, CT on Saturday. After some aquarium fun (I love the penguins), we wandered around Olde Mystik Village for some shopping and snacks and ended up in an artisan honey tasting room (words I’ve never put together before, haha!). Lil Momma had a whole moment when trying some of the “hotter” ones and I was able to find a few to buy and try out at home: lemon honey, ginger honey, and salted caramel honey. We are trying the ginger tonight as part of a stir fry! My arch/ankle saga has gotten a bit worse, sigh. The PT is definitely helping “raise” my fallen arches, but has also identified that I stand on the outer edges of my feet (no wonder balance is hard for me) so we are doing lots of work on that, too. The new challenge, though, is that I seem to have torn/strained my right peroneal tendon and have a ton of swelling in that ankle, which is also stiff any creaky. I’m off to an orthopedist who specializes in feet in a week or so, so hopefully I can get back to wal...

I think I’ve been letting the false idea that I’ll find the perfect time to write a post and edit and tweak a nd etc. get in the way of actually writing anything. So, here’s to a June of rambles and randoms and not replying to things in my head, haha!   Lil Momma and I have been taking walks in the woods on the weekends in our year of living dangerously with the pollen counts and working on our endurance. Also, we are doing a 2-mile Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the fall, as well, and she wants to be super ready (she specifically asked that we find a “walk” and not a “race”, but she still wants to train, haha). 2 weekends ago, she was super whiny from mile 1 because she actively chose not to bring water even though her mother recommended it multiple times, haha sigh. We’ve been watching all these ultra running documentaries, so I decided for this weekend’s adventure to be inspired by them by both making her carry water AND bringing fun snacks to “fuel”. Let me tell you, a lemon...
