three for friday

One We survived dance competition season! Our last one was north of Boston last weekend, so Lil Momma and I packed up on Saturday and drove up to a hotel so we wouldn’t have to wake up, make up, bun up, and get out so early the next day. Beyond the driving nightmares (highway construction, oh so much merging, EXITS ON THE LEFT), we had a lovely afternoon getting settled, visiting the last 2 hours of the first day of competition and seeing her teammates “eat” and “slay”, and then hitting dinner and a random Target spree. The next day, we were up for a hotel breakfast and then check out to go check in at the comp. Lil Momma danced beautifully in all 3 of the dances and her teams did so well – and, the Mr. drove up and surprised her, which was amazing! All in all, a good experience and she and her teacher are already planning her first solo for next year, haha (sigh)!

Two I am having some massive energy struggles this week that have been a bit concerning. Flat-out exhaustion mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and in the evening, to the point I was having to lay down between meetings on my work from home days. The Mr. took over my Googling (I may have been spiraling between perimenopause and pollen-induced histamine fatigue – the pollen has been SUPER high here and I’m covered in hives, too, sigh) and thinks I may be quite dehydrated and not eating often enough. I definitely hear him on the water (she says as she sips on her new constant companion, a water bottle) and am going to try and reconfigure my food to have snacks again. I had been trying to move more and eat a little differently after hearing about some health care (vs. sick care) strategies, but I don’t think I’ve hit on the right timing of meals + snacks + workouts + walks yet. Here’s to feeling more like myself in June!

Three It’s a long weekend here in the US and I’m overly grateful for a break. I am working through lunch and then hope to read a book on my deck with a tea (and a snack) (and a water bottle) for a bit and then take a walk. Once I pick LM up from school, we have dessert first, dinner, and then are going to see a musical at her drama school. Then, it’s family time for 3 days; the Mr. and I might sneak out for a date night, we hope to play some badminton with my Mother’s Day set, and LM and I have big plans to test out our hiking poles and follow the test with donuts. I am sure there will be cleaning and meal prep and Taskmaster and the usual weekend things, but it will be nice to have an extra day to spread it all out.

Bonus item: Sending my blog friend Jenny all the good times grinding it out at the Sweat, Swat n’ Swear 50K on Sunday!!

Have you had wild pollen counts near where you are? At times I feel like this stupidly fragile flower (being attacked by flowers)….

  1. Congrats on surviving dance season! And now you get a three day weekend to celebrate. We're doing a family party at our house this weekend, which I'm very excited for.

  2. AW! Thank you!!! : )
I feel like we live in such different worlds- dance competitions??? I wouldn't even know how to cope with that. Although, I guess if either one of my kids had been into that (ha, fat chance!) I would have learned. It does sound like a very fun weekend away, and some nice bonding time with your daughter. And, it sounds like she did great! Hooray.
I'm going to say... drinking more water is always a good thing- but you're covered in hives? Maybe your body is just exhausted by dealing with this constant pollen you're allergic to. I hope a nice, long weekend gives you a rest and a reset. I hope you enjoy it!

  3. The pollen is literally INSANE where I live this year. I am taking non-drowsy meds most mornings and it has helped a lot.
Also, though, I think you have had a lot on your plate. Processing grief, the logistics of so much time on the road and having to be "on" in such a high-energy setting, work, life, home management. It's A LOT. I think when we're so depleted, even the "little" things just seem so much heavier. Like the straw that breaks the proverbial camels back?
I hope this weekend is restorative and lovely and you feel more like yourself <3

  4. Dance competitions seem so busy and hectic! It's great you made it through.
I was listening to a podcast and one of the things a dietician said was that women often do not eat enough, which translates to a lack of energy. It's such a delicate balance, and I'm sure hydrating more could help too. Hope you have a nice restful weekend!

  5. I luckily don't deal with allergies (I think) although I am told that if you live in Sacramento long enough, you will get them.. haha.... but I know people who suffer from allergies and yes, they can totally drain your energy. I am not surprised you've been feeling tired with all the other things you have going on. Hope you can enjoy the long weekend.

  6. I am so glad I don't have a pollen allergy. It is INSANE here, and I always feel bad for the people who live in my area who do have seasonal allergies. I'm talking... my dark gray car has a green coating during spring/summer months due to all the pollen!

Congrats on surviving dance competition season! Hopefully you can find some restorative days to regain your energy levels. I also struggle with snacking when I need to, so I feel you!

  7. Allergies. Ugh. Mine are STILL raging. I have to take Benadryl + 2 other meds (nasal spray, Zyrtec) to get through the days right now. Not fun. So I get it. And also? You're stressed. You have had an unbelievably heavy year. Dance competition month - while fun - was probably the cherry on top. I hope you are taking time to take care of yourself. And eat and drink. :) (I won't nag, promise...) Hugs. <3
